B-inspired’s Braunstone Befriending Scheme has been very busy over the past few months supporting older residents in Braunstone, who have been feeling the effects of shielding due to Covid19.
The scheme was developed back in 2014 as B-inspired’s NAP (Neighbourhood Action Plan) results indicated that older people needed more access to information and activities. This was to increase community participation and help reduce social isolation in Braunstone amongst these residents.
Up until 2019 the befriending scheme was ran on a very small scale due to ad-hoc funding. In 2019 The Braunstone Befriending Scheme gained funding from the Lottery Community Fund and Masonic Charitable Foundation to help reduce social isolation and loneliness in Braunstone.
Through this additional funding, the team have been able to support more local residents with 1-2-1 befriending and ‘Talk Time’ a social group for older people in the community.
Over the past few months, certain services have unfortunately been postponed due to government guidelines, but that doesn’t mean the team haven’t been just as busy organising activities and craft packs for scheme members and doing weekly welfare calls to ensure members maintain their mental wellbeing during lockdown.
To find out how important ‘The Braunstone Befriending Scheme’ is to members of the local community listen to Raeven, the scheme’s coordinator, talk about all of the fantastic things the team have been up to on Ady Dayman show on BBC Radio Leicester.
If you are an older person and are feeling isolated in your own home, why not get in contact with us.
The Braunstone Befriending Scheme is always looking for volunteers to help out with our project too. So if you have an ear to lend and an hour to befriend, why not get in contact.
We also have plans for a men’s group, which we’re in the process of conducting some focus groups for in October, so follow us on social media for more details.
If you’re interested in finding out more about any of our services, please get in contact with Raeven the Braunstone Befriending Scheme Coordinator.
