Helping our community to access a healthy lifestyle.

Our aim is ‘to use sport and physical activity as a way of improving the quality of life for communities, now and in the future. Working from the heart of our community, b-active is uniquely placed to deliver these opportunities whilst remaining in touch with the wider needs of our residents.

Through our first consultation in 2001, where 752 residents were consulted with, we drew up a Needs Assessment Action Plan, which created many services and facilities in the Braunstone area. These included the SCORE 4 Sport, the Fit and Active Buddies, the Braunstone Leisure Centre and the Braunstone Grove multi-use games area. All theses services are now hosted by other organisations who are taking the projects forward, providing services for the community.

Our established team have built up an impressive record of achievements in all areas of health and well being (See below). Since 2001, our residents’ participation in sport and physical activity has increased from 69% to 88%, thanks to the work of the Sports Action Zone and the Braunstone Community Association through their investment in new buildings and facilities.

The project laid the foundations for improvements at the heart of our community in regards to sport and physical activity. In 2007/2008, we completed our second consultation, where 1,472 residents were consulted, giving us information about participation and residents’ satisfaction levels with what’s on offer. This give us more information about whether the services created from the Needs Assessment Action Plan were working and also what else we needed to do.

Achievements to date

Increasing Participation Levels – 17% more residents are engaged in some sport or physical activity than at the start of the project – an increase of around 2,200.

Some Barriers to Participation Removed – Barriers such as cost, lack of transport and a lack of facilities have largely been removed.

Successfully changing attitudes – Positive attitudes and strong belief in the ability of sport to impact on the wider regeneration agenda – three out of four residents think sport has improved the area.

Future focus

Increasing Participation Levels – Most young people do some sport and physical activity – but only 17% report being active for 60 minutes or more on five days a week.

High Satisfaction Levels – Residents report high levels of satisfaction with most facilities – however Braunstone Park was rated as ‘poor’ by one in three.

More Opportunities for Local Involvement – Volunteering rates have increased, but the percentage of residents engaged in coaching has not – more needs to be done to ‘convert’ qualified coaches into regular coaches.

Participation Levels Should be Sustainable – More than half of adults intend to increase their levels of physical activity in the next six months – and nearly three-quarters of young people would like to do more sport.

Opportunities for Sustaining Delivery – The Braunstone Local Sports Alliance represents an opportunity to keep a strategic overview and partnership involvement in the future – shared vision and objectives are key to avoiding mission drift.

We looked at the future focus and identified what still needed to be done and have created four projects to develop on our success. These projects include:

b-active projects

Sporting Braunstone – Sporting Braunstone is the first community local sports alliance, which aims to improve the quality of sport and physical activity in Braunstone.

Braunstone Community Sports Park – The Park was the worst rated facility for sport and physical activity in our second consultation. This consultation led us to creating a community sport element to the park, with adult and young people outdoor gym areas, trim-trails, new bins, benches and also educational facilities.

Get Active project – The Get Active project was created to combat the amount of younger children between the ages of 5-11 that were taking part in very little activity. It also has the unique feature of the ‘Smoothie Pod’, which allowed participants to make their own free smoothies and learn about nutrition and the 5-a-day scheme.

Achievement Project – The Achievement Project offers training, volunteering, mentoring and employment opportunities within sport and physical activity. There are courses available from the Football level 1, to a Boccia level 1. There are also volunteering and mentoring opportunities at clubs, organisations etc across the city, as well as guaranteed interviews.
